Achyuta Deva Raya

Achyuta Deva Raya
(?-1542)
A ruler of Vijayanagar who belonged to the second dynasty established by Narsingha Saluva in 1486. He was the brother and successor of the celebrated ruler Krishna Deva Raya (1509-1529). Achyuta Deva Raya began occupying the throne in 1530 and continued to rule down to 1542. He lost the frontier fortresses of Mudgal and Raichur recovered by Krishna Deva Raya from the 'Adil Shahi sultan of Bijapur after a fierce struggle. In 1535-1536, 'Adil Shah was emboldened to invade Vijayanagar and departed from there only after receiving a heavy tribute. During Achyuta Raya's reign, a large number of grants were made to temples by the nobles. Many inscriptions pertaining to these grants have survived in different parts of southern India.
